LEGO Storage Boxes

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Our new range of stackable LEGO brick plastic storage boxes are coming soon to a STORE near you…and as we get closer to the week we exclusively launch our LEGO brick storage box range in the UK we’ve had some great new photos taken of the these neat modular storage solutions. I thought it’d nice to give you a sneak peak here on the blog before the official launch as I’m really pleased with the results of the photo shoot:

Our new range of LEGO brick plastic storage boxes are not just for small kids storage needs!

I’m delighted with these great photos of our new LEGO brick plastic storage boxes but I can’t help thinking they look a bit surreal as I’m not use to seeing LEGO bricks at this sort of scale. I’m really pleased that we also managed to get a photo of the boxes under the bed.  When we first saw these stacking LEGO storage boxes with thought they’d be great for children’s toy storage but they actually make great underbed storage boxes for big kids too!

Our new range of LEGO plastic storage boxes will be available in STORE from mid July 2010…it’ll be worth the wait, they’re the best looking children’s toy storage boxes we’ve seen in years!

What’s in store for storage?

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Last September I wrote an article for Architects DataFile Magazine titled “What’s in store for storage?” Whilst it was primarily a paper aimed at encouraging architects to include more storage space in the homes they design, some really interesting stats. came out from the research and I thought it may be interesting to publish an extract here on STORE’s blog:

In the last 30 years, UK home ownership has doubled. Whilst those in Parliament may be cooing at this statistic, living and functioning in 21st century homes, which are being built 40% smaller than those of 80 years ago, presents one major dilemma for architects: how to use that space – or lack of space – effectively.

Those in Whitehall may have to shoulder some of the responsibility for our cramped living conditions with planning policy insisting on more densely packed housing, but property owners must also take some of the blame.  Consumers are acquiring more and more possessions compared to previous generations, for whom the must-have bargain was secondary to the functional necessities in the home.

Smaller spaces are a real challenge for architects, but the answer may be simpler than it seems.  Consumers are actively seeking flexible, timesaving storage solutions, but, in light of the ongoing credit crunch, at an affordable price.  As a result, there is, in fact, a rare opportunity for architects to easily and cheaply deliver the storage solutions that clients want.  There are a growing number of brands in the home storage and de-cluttering arena, developing interesting products to solve the storage / clutter and space dilemma.

The growth trends in the storage market are no longer in the products aimed at solving a simple issue, such as where to store an umbrella or bunch of keys.  Instead, the demand is for more comprehensive, whole room solutions.

Wardrobes and compact dressing rooms are important to the future of the sector, as is an organised utility room or effective boot room storage – straightforward ideas that few architects are currently incorporating into their designs.

Gone are the days of satisfying a client with a simple clothes rod and shelf inside their wardrobe.  Modern wardrobe storage systems have to be flexible and adapt to the customer’s ever changing needs – for example, the most desirable wardrobes have innovative and efficient storage spaces for shoe storage, clothes rails and accessories, while remaining compact and maintaining the ability to add or change the space whenever this is required.

Increasingly, value buying is at the top of the consumer agenda.  The savvy consumer is now demanding more for their money – everything they buy must have a real use and worth.  Despite, or perhaps because of, the pressures of the current economic climate, the ‘throwaway’ culture for cheap goods is in decline – homeowners are now looking for products that combine good quality with reasonable prices and, in terms of homeware in particular, that will stand the test of time.

Home storage solutions have to work harder, be multifunctional, and be cleverly utilised in all available space, yet they must still look great.  The market leaders in the affordable and attractive home furnishings sector are, as might be expected, the ever innovative Scandinavians, who continue to produce a plethora of good quality, well engineered modular storage ranges such as elfa shelving that satisfy not only this need, but also the requirement for a stylish yet cost effective solution at the same time.

Midway between the ‘cheap and cheerful’ and exclusive high-end design, sit the ‘middle shelf’ brands, which offer quality, simple yet stylish storage solutions at an affordable price – ideal in the current property market, which is forcing architects and developers to make homes look fantastic on a tighter budget than ever, given that price rises are no longer guaranteed, or even expected.  Among these are one or two real gems, offering great modular products that look equally at home dressed-up inside a fitted wardrobe or dressing rooms or in a raw functional state within a utility room, pantry or garage.

However, whatever the state of their finances, it will be difficult for consumers to let go entirely of the aspirational look that has dominated home makeover and property development programmes for so long.  The key ingredients demanded by the current market are flexibility and value, but style will always have a part to play, particularly to get optimum prices when the time comes to sell.  To impress developers and end users alike, effective storage solutions are something to be considered as an integral element of any project  – and not just an afterthought.

This article was first published by Simon Glanville in the Architects DataFile Magazine, September 2009. Simon Glanville is the Managing Director of Förvara Ltd, Elfa® distributor UK. Förvara Ltd is a group company of STORE, specialists in home storage and organisational products.

100% Biodegradable Plastic Storage Boxes

Recyclable Plastic Storage Boxes

If you haven’t spotted our new range of plastic Nick Nack storage boxes yet they went onto our STORE shelves a few days ago. These neat little plastic boxes have a bigger story to tell than perhaps is offered at first sight. Apart from being a great little storage box for all those trinkets and bits & bobs that always seem to clutter-up your drawers, they’re actually made from the world’s first 100% biodegradable plastic. Each storage box is manufactured from a combination of polymer and corn starch which when disposed of in compost or soil will TOTALLY biodegrade in 6 – 9 months. Still not convinced? Here’s the science bit:

To create our new plastic storage boxes, naturally occurring bacteria are fed sugar that is obtained from corn starch. The bugs digest the sugar and store the resulting PHBV polymer much as the human body would store fat. The “fat” is then extracted and becomes an injection mouldable polymer called poly-3-hydroxy butyrate-co-valerate…a derivative of the molecule that Forbes magazine declared “one of the five molecules that will change the world.”…and guess what, it was first developed right here in Blighty in the late 1980s

LEGO Storage Brick Boxes on tour in New York

I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a range of new storage product in…oooh….it must be weeks!  Due into STORE HQ next month as part of our summer 2010 range is a new assortment of LEGO storage boxes, ideal for toy storage.

These neat new LEGO brick storage boxes are giant versions of the classic clip-together LEGO bricks and will be available at STORE in LEGO’s traditional 1970’s colour scheme of red, blue, green and yellow plus we’ve asked our manufacturer to produce a pink LEGO storage brick for little girls.

Stack 'em to create more storage space

Offering a fun way to encourage kids to tidy-up after themselves, just like real LEGO the storage brick boxes can also be stacked on top of each other to create cool LEGO structures. Hmmmm…vertical storage, our professional decluterring friends at APDO would be proud of us…..we’re always being told that vertical storage offers a great solution to creating additional room in small spaces.

Also in the new LEGO storage brick range and I can’t yet decided whether I find these fun or freaky(!) is a giant version of the iconic yellow LEGO man head. Unlike the much smaller original, our LEGO man head is 27cm high (that’s human head size) and opens up to reveal storage space inside.  Just like the LEGO storage brick boxes, the giant LEGO man storage head can also be neatly fixed onto another storage brick and removed when required.

I’m really excited to see my first giant LEGO storage brick box and I’m wondering whether there’s going to be applications past toy storage.  At 50cm long the largest brick would make for a great CD / DVD storage box for big kids or how about stacking them and storing newspapers and magazines inside for a striking feature in the living room?

The LEGO Storage Brick Boxes range is availble in STORE from late May 2010

Summer Storage Solutions range hits our shelves

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

STORE buyer Julie F. and I have just returned from a whistle-stop tour of several obscure European destinations finalising our summer storage solutions range with our favourite makers. Thankfully we arrived back in the UK a few days before Eyjafjallajokull erupted but nevertheless still managed some interesting highlights…

Stylish new storage solutions aside we were privileged enough to have dinner last Wednesday evening expertly severed by the Queen’s ex-high tea butler at Windsor. The charismatic Frenchman is now head waiter at a charming little restaurant in a very unassuming yet picturesque location on the edge of a Danish woodland close to the workshops of STORE manufacturer Kim D.

Suitably tight-lipped about his previous employer, our French host’s waiting-on skills were nothing less than perfect albeit that they were probably lost on our unrefined pallets. He was though extremely complimentary about British puds, rating both Spotted Dick and Eton Mess amongst others as “the best deserts the world has to offer”.

STORE storage solutions buyer Julie F

I’m not entirely sure what we’d done to receive such regal treatment but next day we were driven off to the airport in a Mercedes limo that (according to the driver) was “the most expensive Merc in Denmark”.

Replete with massage chairs, a mini-bar and bullet proof glass, the previous occupant the day before was Kevin Costner who’s touring Europe with his folk band!

Back down to earth and back in UK at planet STORE I’m pleased to report that several items Julie’s chosen for our new summer storage & organisational products range are already starting to arrive here at STORE HQ. We’ll be adding these new storage products to our online offering over the next few weeks (check-out our WHAT’S NEW section for details) but it you can’t wait, they’re already available in our flagship STORE in Chester.

Bespoke Wooden Wine Racks

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Great news for those who love our made-to-measure bespoke wine racks for cellars but don’t have the storage space.  Our friend Richard, maker of our bespoke wooden wine racks right here in England (there’s no low quality cheap imports here!) has now made STORE a range of ready assembled smaller wine storage racks for us mere mortals without the storage space for several hundred bottles Rutherford Napa Valley!

Richard’s new traditional wooden wine racks come in both 30 and 90 bottle sizes, the latter is perfect for those with storage space under the stairs or a utility room or pantry. The 30 bottle wine rack can be stored neatly on a kitchen work surface or even inside a kitchen storage cupboard and one thing’s for sure, you won’t be disappointed when you see the quality of these bespoke-made wine racks. Thanks Richard, you’re a star!

STORE’s plastic storage boxes on the space shuttle!?!

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Our Plastic Storage Boxes are out of this world!

Watching BBC TV yesterday I was amused to see that the space shuttle Atlantis has blasted off to the International Space Station carrying a million worms from Bristol destined for a zero gravity muscle wasting experiment.

Even more surprising was that the publicity shot showing the Caenorhabditis Elegans worms at their UK home showed them happily living inside one of our sturdy plastic storage boxes! Our storage box (it’s the 9 litre plastic box) was sitting on a shelf inside the scientists fridge.

I’m not entirely sure whether our plastic storage boxes made it into orbit but it did bring a smile to my face thinking that we could be the first storage solutions retailer to have made it into outer space.

Shoe Storage Cabinet Alert!

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I can’t believe how many times we get asked for shoe storage boxes and shoe racks each day in STORE and walking around our stock room I can’t believe how many different shoe storage ideas we stock.  Not content with stocking one type of shoe rack and a simple clear plastic shoe storage box, our buyer Lindsey has to have more and more (and more shoe storage ideas in store). I’m still not convinced that the trip to L.A. to find the best clear sliding and stacking shoe drawers was entirely work related but hey, our clear plastic shoe boxes are fab. and all the way from L.A.

Lindsey’s latest shoe storage foray has been to the Gulf of Finland where she’d found the most amazing shoe storage cabinets. We tried and tested a few shoe storage cabinets from the UK over the last couple of years but they’ve just all been, well, rather underwhelming! We then went and looked at some seriously expensive shoe storage cabinets in Italy and finally this week she’s plumped for a great range of shoe benches and shoes storage cabinets in oak, walnut and MDF.  Check ‘em out online and in STORE (soon) as I think they’re a really nice storage product at a really good price and much better than any shoe storage cabinets we’ve seen in UK before. Better still, Lindsey gets yet another gold star for her umpteenth new shoe storage addition to the store range!

Storage Specialists from Around the World

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

It’s amazing how often we get requests from overseas customers for our storage and organisational products. Unfortunately we only ship to UK, and Ireland at present but do occasionally send our storage solutions to Europe and USA if you give us a ring us at STORE.

Actually that’s not strictly true, we had a request from NATO recently to ship 500 wooden shoe racks to Afghanistan to help with storage issues in their Kabul barracks.  Packing the shoe racks was easy but the transport was a tad more difficult and required a USAF aircraft from Germany! Back on subject and if you don’t live in the UK here’s a few overseas retailers that may be able to help:

For our Antipodean friends who keep asking us to ship down under, Australia has it’s very own storage and organisational store, Howards Storage World (HSW). We’ve never ventured into one of Howards Storage World stores in Australia but if the Howards Storage World website is anything to go by they’re doing a great job.

Recently Howards Storage World has also opened stores in the Middle East, Spain and now Ireland and Scotland.  Welcome to the UK Howards Storage World who are opening in The Centre Livingston (83 Almondvale South next to Argos if you want to take a look). If you live near-by and want to take a trip plug in EH54 6NB  into your Sat. Nav.

As well as stocking the usual range of home storage products, Howards Storage World UK will also be stocking elfa shelving and storage systems so the good folk shopping in The Centre Livingston can also see the great elfa and elfa decor range that we so often shout about. HSW’s Easy-Build shelving system is also worth a look too if you live near Howards in Livingston, it’s is a free standing, fully adjustable shelving solution that doesn’t require tools to assemble. Pre-designed kits are available from Howards for shelves, wardrobes and even wine racks.

As and when we hear more from Howards Storage World UK up in Livingston we’ll keep you posted. If you prefer, Howards Storage World has a great e-newsletter so you can receive regular updates on Howards products and de-cluttering tips. Simply log-on to the Howards Storage World Website for more details.

For those of you who don’t live near one of our very own STORE’s here in the North West we’ve a lot of respect for UK retailer Lakeland. Originally known as Lakeland Plastics they’ve some great ideas in their Lakeland Solutions catalogue. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in our STORE we’re always sending our customers in the direction of Lakeland Chester as their range of kitchen bakeware products is second to none.

Across the pond in USA we love The Container Store. For those of you who can’t get to one of their 60 odd stores you can also shop online for their great ideas on storage and organisation.  Better still they have a great design service for elfa and elfa decor shelving which can be used in The Container Store and also online just like Howards Storage World in Oz.

STORE on the Telly etc.

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

My colleagues insisted I write something in our storage solutions blog about the article on STORE in last October’s Elle Decoration. We’re delighted that Elle Decoration (the world’s best-selling homes magazine) dedicated an entire page entitled “Box Clever” in their Insider Guide to us. The article on page 68 was the result of an interview conducted over the telephone whilst my new baby boy (Will) cried incessantly in the background. If you want to take a look and can’t find a copy at your local store you can subscribe at www.elledeco.co.uk. The article even provoked a phone call from my sister at the other end of the country quoting that Elle Deco had branded me a “Storage Guru” ! To Read More Click Here!
